In a sensational incident indicating the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, a 17-year-old girl was seriously injured after three men barged into her home in Chaatha area and flung her off the second floor over her objection to eve-teasing, in Mathura on Monday night.
The girl’s elder brother Dinesh Singh alleged that three youths had been harassing his sister for about a year. “Last Monday night, around 8 pm, our father got a call from an unidentified caller who sought to know his location. When my father said that he was in Chaatha, the caller told him that they wanted to speak to my sister. When my father refused, they abused him. Soon, three men arrived on a motorcycle and barged into our house. They assaulted my family, including my mother and sister. Later, two of them dragged my sister to the second floor and threw her off the balcony, breaking her spinal cord," he alleged.
Nearby CCTV footage caught the girl falling flat on the street and people rushing towards her to help her. The video was shared by some journalist on Twitter stating that the girl was in the hospital with a fractured spinal cord. "She is admitted to a private hospital and has got severe injuries in her spinal cord and other parts of the body. She is in a critical condition," the girl's father Prem Pal Singh told reporters. The accused are said to be natives of Bihar.
The family also alleged that when they reached the police station on Monday night to register a complaint they were told to come the next day.
However, SP (Rural) Shrish Chandra said that the victim’s family member gave a written complaint at the local police station on Tuesday morning after which an FIR was lodged. "Action was taken immediately and two accused were arrested on Wednesday. The third accused would be arrested soon and further action was underway,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, blaming the BJP government over the crime against women, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday said, “Women's safety is in God's hands in UP. In Mathura, goons who had been harassing a girl for a year entered her house and threw her from the terrace. A girl, troubled over being teased, ended her own life in Hamirpur. Such crimes are being committed against women in the state which would make one's soul tremble, but the government is sleeping.”
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, four young men lost their lives and two others were injured after their SUV (Scorpio) hit the divider and overturned on Ring Road in Agra on Tuesday night. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.
The six occupants of the Scorpio had gone to Noida to attend a birthday party. While returning, one of tyres burst, after which the driver lost control of the vehicle, rammed onto a divider and overturned. All the car occupants of the vehicle were under 20 years of age and were residents of Agra. The deceased were identified as Ashish (19), Arshad (19), Krishna (16), and Nikhil (18). The two injured were Kanik and Kabir, both around 17 years of age. All involved in the incident were residents of Agra.
