Several senior Congress leaders and hundreds of workers were detained by the police for trying to ghearo Reserve Bank of India’s regional headquarters in Gomtinagar, lucknow to protest demonetisation on Wednesday.

The agitating Congressmen charged that the RBI had failed on all fronts to address the woes of common man after the Centre announced demonetisation of high value notes in November last year.

While a delegation led by senior leaders including former Union minister Shakeel Ahmed, MP Pramod Tewari, Sanjay Singh submitted a memorandum, some Congress workers managed to reach the RBI office and raised slogans against PM Narendra Modi and RBI Governor Urjit Patel.

Demanding resignation of RBI Governor Urjit Patel for throwing 125 crore Indians into a disarray, Chairman of UP Congress Media Cell Satyadeo Tripathi accused the Modi government of converting the RBI into a ‘RSS shakha’.

Tripathi said, “Even after all these days of note ban, there is no respite for the common man and theywere still reeling. Demonetisation has ruined our economy and millions have been rendered jobless. The protest is to highlight the citizens’ plight,” Tripathi alleged.

“While in power, Congress has never compromised with the autonomy of RBI. We will continue to raise the issue of common people facing hardship in the state legislatures and also the Parliament,” Tripathi stresed.

Meanwhile, Congress MlC Deepak Singh termed the Modi government as a ‘golmaal sarkar’. “The government refuses to answer questions as to under which law, restrictions were imposed on citizens from withdrawing their own money. The RBI Governor is equally responsible for the plight of the citizens and he should resign,” the MlC said.
