Crime against women gone down in last five years : Azam Khan

PNS

Calling media reports about spiral in crime against women as a ‘lie’, Parliamentary Affairs minister Azam Khan said that the incidence of crime against women has gone down during the last five years during the present SP regime.

Khan said that reports appearing in media were false and alleged that there was a sustained conspiracy against the state government.

The media had reported about the increase in crime against women quoting a CAG report.

The CAG in its report on “ Empowerment of Women” ending March 31,2015, that tabled in the Assembly disclosed that the incidence of crime against women in the state has been rising consistently during the last five years. It said there has been 61 per cent increase in incidence of crime against women between 2010-11 and 2014-15. There was substantial increase in cases of rape ( 43 per cent) and kidnapping and abduction of girls/ women ( 21 per cent) during 2013-14 as compared to previous years, it said.

The CAG also said that number of girls not attending pre-school education activities has exponentially increased from 3 per cent in 2010-11 to 33 per cent in 2014-15.

It also suggested that the shortage of about 55 per cent police personnel if not immediately bridged, it may further worsen the crime scenario in UP.

Besides women police personnel constitute only 4.55 per cent of the total police force in the state against the Ministry of Home Affairs advisory of 33 per cent.

“Actually, the crime rate has gone down by  6 to 33 per cent but some fake figures have been given to defame the state government,” Khan said.

The minister further said, “Actually the crime rate in BJP-ruled states have gone up but with Assembly elections nearing, the media has come up with fake figures and reports.”
