Just a day before Valentine’s Day, a couple were killed for getting married in Sant Kabir Nagar. Efforts were also made to burn their bodies but some locals informed police after which the bodies were sent for autopsy.
Reports said that some persons were performing the last rites of a youth and a girl on the banks of Kuhano river in Baridih area of Mahuli in Sant Kabir Nagar on Saturday morning. However, the local police reached there after getting information and those performing the last rites fled the scene. Senior officers also reached the spot over reports of ‘honour killing’.
With the help of locals, the victims were identified as Sagar and Kanchan, both of Mudhadih locality of Dhankata in Sant Kabir Nagar. SHO Ravindra Kumar Gautam claimed that both Sagar and Kanchan were having an affair for a long time but their families were against it.
On Friday evening, Kanchan reached Sagar’s residence and both went to a temple where they got married. Locals claimed that as the families of the two learnt of the wedding, they reached there and took both to a secluded place where both were battered to death by them.
Some residents also claimed that the two consumed poison to end their lives. Both the families later took the bodies and tried to perform the last rites. The cops claimed by the time they reached the spot, the bodies were almost 90 per cent burnt. They somehow doused the fire and sent the bodies for autopsy. The police said that the investigation also hinted at the role of the local pradhan apart from the family members. A case was registered in this connection while further investigations were underway.
Meanwhile, a girl student was raped in Meerut after she was called to a hotel on the pretext of attending a birthday party. The police managed to arrest the accused. The incident took place under the Medical police station area around five days back. The police sent the victim for a medical examination. However, parents of the accused reached the police station and rejected the girl’s allegations.
The victim’s parents lodged a complaint naming the accused as Munnu. In their complaint, the girl’s parents stated that their daughter was taken to a hotel on the pretext of celebrating birthday and was raped. Parents of the accused camped at the police station and termed the allegations baseless.
