Council polls rescheduled

PNS

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has rescheduled the elections to the 36 seats from 35 local bodies’ constituencies of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

As per the poll schedule announced earlier by the ECI. the Legislative Council elections were proposed to be held in two phases on March 3 and 7 along with the sixth and seventh phases of the UP assembly polls.

The 36 seats will fall vacant on March 7 next.

As per the revised schedule, the nomination process will commence from March 15. The previous nomination process that commenced on February 4 has been suspended. The ECI has now decided to hold the polls in a single phase on April 9 and the counting of votes will be taken up on April 12.

The ECI sources said in Lucknow on Sunday that the polls were rescheduled after all political parties made representation to the poll panel and highlighted the difficulties in simultaneously carrying out their election campaign for both UP Assembly and Legislative Council elections. The political parties said that two elections were of different nature and would create confusion among the party workers and electors at large.
