A head constable was suspended after investigations revealed that a licensed gun belonging to him was used during a celebratory firing at a wedding function in Meerut in which a photographer was critically injured on Tuesday night.

The police said that the accused had fled the venue with the CCTV's DVR after the incident on the fateful night.

The head constable was punished for indiscipline and was earlier booked for attempt to murder by the Meerut police.

The incident took place inside a banquet hall in Gangasagar Colony on Tuesday night.

The victim, identified as Vijay Kumar, was operated upon at a private hospital and doctors said the bullet had damaged his stomach and intestines. The police had registered a case at Bhawanpur police station and booked two unidentified persons for the crime based on a complaint lodged by the photographer's colleague, present at the function.

During investigation, the police stumbled upon the fact that the wedding ceremony was of head constable Mahendra Singh’s grandson who was posted in Hapur. It also surfaced that Singh had fired shots from his licensed gun and when the photographer was hit by a bullet, he fled the scene with the CCTV DVR. The head constable was subsequently booked under sections of attempt to murder.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Hapur, Deepak Bhukar, said, "It came to light that the head constable was absent from duty without any prior notice or permission. He has been suspended for negligence on duty and a departmental probe has been ordered against him."
