Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Sunday, had to suspend the proceedings for second postmortem of bodies of two cousins, who were raped and murdered in May last in Badaun, after they failed to recover the bodies from the graves submerged in Ganga waters.
Several efforts of CBI and the district authorities went in vain for the second day on Sunday when they could not succeed in recovering the bodies due to overflowing Ganga. Now the agency will have to wait for the water to recede to recover the bodies.
CBI has sought help of engineers of the Bridge Corporation to assist them in the recovering the bodies.
AIIMS, New Delhi doctor Awadhesh Srivastava, who is among the three doctors came from New Delhi to perform the postmortem, said seeing the rise in Ganga water level at the spot it seems impossible to recover the bodies. “We have to wait for some time for the water to recede to recover the bodies,” he said.
Other two doctors in the team are from Safadarganj hospital and Maulana Azaz Hospital, in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the CBI has stepped up its investigation in the rape and murder case, and several officials of the agency are camping on crime spot.
“The CBI is inspecting all the theories in the murder and even made a mock hanging drill on the same tree similar to like how the sisters were found hanging,” sources disclosed.
Earlier, the CBI took the decision of second post-mortem to be done on spot after recovery of bodies at Ataina ghat, where district administration has made all necessary arrangements including tent, generators and lights.
District Magistrate, Sambhunath said administration had given permission to CBI for second autopsy and all arrangements have been made for the autopsy on the spot.
A team of doctors from Delhi has already arrived in Badaun. However, irrigation department officials claimed that the Ganga water has already submerged the graves of the two victim sisters and it would be hard for the CBI to trace out the bodies.
On Saturday, CBI dug around 8 feet but could not trace the bodies. “To protect erosion of soil, area of the graves have been surrounded by bamboo and sand bags but still the water can have impact on the bodies,” officials said.
On July 17, the medical board constituted by the CBI had recommended to go ahead with the second autopsy as it found several loopholes in the first conducted by the local doctors in Badaun after which they gave its nod for fresh post-mortem examination.
The CBI wanted to get the second postmortem examination conducted as they wanted to get some doubts cleared about the rape and murder theory as floated by family members and local residents.
The two cousins, aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a tree in the village in Ushait area the next day.
