In a bizarre incident, a Block Development Officer (BDO) drove his car for four kilometres with a youth precariously perched on thebonnet of his car after being chased by villagers over construction and payment for toilets at Kitauna village of Ramnagar block in Bareilly on Friday.

BDO Pankaj Kumar Gupta visited the village but was soon mobbed by irate villagers who demanded the remaining money for construction of toilets in their houses. After he failed to give satisfactory answer, the locals chased the official who started the car and tried to drive off.

Suddenly, a youth climbed on the car bonnet but that did not deter the BDP fom stopping the car and he drove for about four kilometers. later, the BDO filed a complaint against the villagers while the youth, identified as Brajpal, too filed a counter complaint.

The villagers alleged that the BDO was demanding money from them for releasing the remaining amount for construction of toilets. The BDO dismissed the charges saying that the toilets were not constructed as per norms hence the next instalment was withheld. He informed that 105 people were sanctioned toilets in the village and were given Rs 6000 each but only 70 people constructed toilets that violating the norms.

“The villagers attacked us forcing us to flee. How can government employees work in such a condition,” he asked.
