The Uttar Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has set a target of enrolling two crore members and a strategy to launch the membership drive will be chalked out in a meeting to be held in Lucknow on June 16.

The meeting, to be chaired by Union minister and BJP state chief Mahendra Nath Pandey, will be attended by senior BJP leaders, state unit office-bearers and district level leaders.

BJP state general secretary and MLC Vijay Bahadur Pathak said in Lucknow on Friday that the agenda of the meeting would be membership drive and the task given by the central leadership for meeting the target of enrolling 20 per cent more new member from the current number of 1.36 crore in the state.

“By fulfilling the target, the total members of the BJP in UP will touch the 2-crore mark and it will be a record of sorts in the country,” he said.

Pathak said that along with discussion on organisational aspect, the BJP leaders could also hold brief deliberations on issues like improving links between the government and the party. “The party will depute leaders for the membership drive and discuss its nitty-gritty,” he added.

Meanwhile, sources said that the meeting could also discuss upcoming bypolls to 12 assembly seats in the state. These seats fell vacant after sitting MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha. They include three state ministers — Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Satyadeo Pachauri and SPS Baghel — besides senior Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan.

During the meeting, the party leaders will honour BJP state chief Mahendra Nath Pandey, under whose leadership the party won  62 Lok Sabha seats in UP.
