Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claimed that his government was concerned with the poor and hence soon after assuming power, he ended VIP culture especially in power supply as a result of which people in rural areas too were getting power like those living in urban areas.

“It is strange that as the world is surging ahead, the Power department in Uttar Pradesh was going backwards with people having problem to get smooth power supply,” said Yogi. He made the comments soon after distribution free power connections to urban poor in Madan Mohan Malviya Industrial University in Gorakhpur on Saturday.

Taking a dig at the previous Samajwadi Party regime, Yogi said that people living in urban areas do not even think of going to villages.

``During the last regime, people and children stopped going to their native villages during holidays as they feared power cuts for several days at a stretch. Now, I have given directions that not only power supply will be equal in urban and rural areas but faulty transformers should also be changed within 48-hours in villages and 24-hours in urban areas,” he added.

The CM also charged the SP government for purchasing costly power which hit the state exchequer hard. ``The SP government was purchasing power at high rates but after I assumed office, we have been purchasing cheap power. This has not only improved power supply but also checked misuse of public money,” the CM asserted.

Earlier, Yogi met with relatives of martyred jawan Sahab Shukla and gave a cheque of Rs 4 lakh and a Fixed Deposit of Rs 2 lakh to the family members on Saturday.

Yogi, who was on a two-day tour to his Parliamentary constituency of Gorakhpur, reached martyr’s native village Kanail on Saturday. He consoled the martyr’s family members and assured them that the state government will provide every possible help. Yogi announced that Rs 20 lakh will be given to Shuklas wife and Rs 5 lakh to his parents.

On June 24, CRPF jawan Shukla was killed while another jawan injured when militants attacked their vehicle at Pantha Chowk on the outskirts of Srinagar. The CRPF personnel, part of road-opening deployment, were sitting inside their vehicle at Pantha Chowk bypass along Srinagar-Jammu national highway when militants attacked them.

At Kanail village, Yogi also flagged off a ‘School Chalo’ programme from the primary school. He said that UP government was continuously trying to upgrade the level of primary schools across the state. He also distributed books and uniforms to the children.
