With the commitment to provide affordable and up-to-date medical facilities to the people of Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has planned to construct a medical college in each of the 75 districts of the state.
The government has planned to open medical colleges on a public-private partnership model in 16 districts of the state that do not have any medical college. The Uttar Pradesh government will soon introduce a new policy on this, an official said.
Strengthening health facilities at the grassroots level, the Yogi-led BJP government will increase the number of health centres in rural and urban areas. Super-specialty hospitals will also be constructed in districts including Gorakhpur, Agra, and Varanasi.
In December 2020, interacting with some top businessmen in Mumbai, CM Yogi had said that out of a total of 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh, many still required medical colleges and there was an opportunity for investors to open these medical colleges on the PPP model.
Besides, the state needs super specialty hospitals and the government will extend full support if somebody wants to set up these hospitals.
"Gorakhpur has many patients coming from Bihar and Nepal and the super-specialty hospitals are always needed there," the official said.
The Yogi government is preparing to make Uttar Pradesh a hub of medical education where not only the people of the state but people from across the world can get all types of medical facilities.
The establishment of AIIMS in Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli is proving to be a milestone in terms of UP's medical education and health facilities.
To deal with a situation like the COVID-19 pandemic, there are also plans to set up labs in hospitals of every district. For this, the Medical and Health Department will seek the assistance of Rs 20 lakh crore from the Central government.
Till 2016, there were only 12 medical colleges in UP and the health facilities in the state were also poor. But soon after the Yogi government took charge, the foundation stones of 28 medical colleges were laid. Out of these 28 colleges, studies have started in seven. The construction of 13 medical colleges has started whereas construction of eight medical colleges will be completed by next year.
It is worth mentioning that proposals to open several medical colleges in the private sector are also under consideration. Many district hospitals are being upgraded by the government. Apart from this, there are also plans to open a large scale wellness centre.
