Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav admitted on Friday, that the police probably did not have intelligence inputs and not done their home work before going to free the encroached land in Mathura leading to a fracas which left 24 people including two police officers killed and scord other injured.
Yadav was speaking to media persons in Barabanki after attending an official function.
"What happened in Mathura is unfortunate. Now it is clear that the police had gone there without assessing the fire power of the encroachers on government land. There are some lapses which will come to light during probe,” Yadav said
The CM felt that the police officials should have done their home work and prepared themselves before reaching the scene. "The police probably did not know that criminals in the garb of sadhus were staying in the make-shift camps and were armed to their teeth. I think the poor people might have been assured by the transgressors of providing land which lead to such congregation," Yadav said.
"An inquiry has been ordered and the facts will come to light soon. The government will ensure that stringent action is taken against whoever is guilty,” Yadav said.
The CM said that he had spoken to Union Home minister Rajnath Singh and apprised him of the situation. He said that DGP, ADG and Principal Secretary (Home) were camping at the troubled town to restore normalcy.
"The so-called 'satyagrahis' had encroached on government land and the police had gone there to vacate it following after orders from teh High Court. Earlier the police had held several rounds of talks but they refused to vacate the land,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor Ram Naik, who is in Mumbai, sought a detailed report from the Chief Minister about the Mathura incident. He had a telephonic discussion with the CM and asked the state government to arrest the accused soon and take strict action.
Naik also expressed heartfelt sympathies for the bereaved family of slain SP (City) Mukul Dwivedi and SHO, Farah, Santosh Kumar.
