Taking charge as head of the biggest police force just two months before his retirement, AK Jain, made a history on Tuesday when he became the first officer in the State to get an extension for three months on the post of director general of police.
The confusion over his retirement due on Tuesday ended in the evening when the Centre, after clearance of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) reportedly released extension order of Jain, who was attending his farewell tea party here at DGP office in the evening. RsRsThe proposal for extension of DGP AK Jain has been accepted by the Centre and now he will continue of the same post”, confirmed chief secretary, Alok Ranjan, while disclosing the decision taken by the Centre. State government had sent his proposal for three months extension just on last Friday.
Interestingly, state government came in for sharp criticism after they handed over charge of DGP to AK Jain, when he had just two months left for his retirement. What is more surprising that he was known as an officer close to Bahujan Samaj Party but still chief minister Akhilesh Yadav not only handed over him the responsibility but also sought his extension. It may be also mentioned here that Jain was also recently in controversy when a CB CID enquiry, conducted in arson case at former Congress president, Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s house, raised finger over his conduct and accused of him not performing his duty. The report said that Jain, who was then IG lucknow Zone, instead of visiting to above sensational crime, went to a property dispute site that too in the mid-night. Not only this, when four innocent youths were sent to jail by the lucknow police and the matter was also brought to his notice, Jain took no cognizance and left the officials to send all the innocents to jail. In that case, CB CID registered criminal case against the then SSP lucknow, SP (east), Circle officer of Hazratganj and other local police officers but Jain was spared.
Earlier also, chief minister made similar request of extension for AK Gupta, another IPS officer whom this Samajwadi Party government made DGP when he had just one month left for his retirement. However, while Gupta’s proposal has been reportedly withdrawn by the government at the last moment and he retired on the scheduled time, Jain got a must sought relief when he got three months extension. Interestingly, many of the senior officers called both Gupta and Jain as the RsNight Watchman’, who were sent to bat for law and order just when they were few days left to attend retirement. However, when Gupta was out on the scheduled time, Jain’s inning got extension by the Centre.
Sources said that the extension had also resulted into a major setback to some IPS officers who were hoping to get a call from the state government and take charge from Jain. However, now they had to wait for some more time to reach to the top post.
