Twenty four years after being named for forwarding logistic support to an accused of serial blasts which rocked India’s financial capital in 1993, Qadeer Ahmed of Bijnore was arrested by a joint team of Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. The accused was netted from Ahmed’s home in Bijnore on Saturday morning.
Interestingly, Ahmed, accused of smuggling arms and ammunition used in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai was said to be living a normal life with his family for over a decade in his native village but soon after picking him up, the ATS claimed it to be a ‘major breakthrough’.
“TADA accused Qadeer Ahmed (a resident of Najibabad in Bijnore) allegedly played an important role in smuggling arms and ammunition supplied by Tiger Memon (one of the prime suspects in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which were later used in the Mumbai blasts,” a UP ATS official said in lucknow on Saturday.
IG, ATS, Aseem Arun, said that the arrest was made by UP Police in a joint operation with Gujarat counterparts and Ahmed was arrested from Bijnore’s Najijabad area.
Ahmed will be produced before a magistrate and taken to Gujarat on a transit remand.
