Sir — This refers to the report, “Don’t stop JNU V-C, staff from entering admin block, says HC” (February 17). One is appalled at the indisciplined conduct of some students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University as they gheraoed a few faculty members for long hours over the attendance issue. Students are subject to some minimum restriction/discipline at a university and attendance is a part of it.
Class rooms are not public halls where one can come and hear at one’s own sweet will. What is repulsing is that leaders of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union have been demanding respect for their opinion, while forgetting to do the same to the faculty members. The JNU authorities must be firm and students must see reason and withdraw from self destructive path, for the freedom they seek is not available in any prestigious university.
