Wrong attitude

TT Sakaria

Sir — This refers to the article “The sordid politics of religious conversions” (December 17) by Rajesh Singh. The view of the writer is myopic and jaundiced. Though Jawaharlal Nehru was one of our greatest statesmen, he too was narrow-minded in some ways. The writer has chosen the same attitude.

With the general feeling in every human being that his religion is more superior, nobody can change his stand, though an inexplicable spiritual experience is likely to make one do so. How can one question the desire of an individual to convertIJ Moreover, it is impossible to convert a person with inducement or threat. Heaven and hell are just a matter of faith, and religion is a dangerous poison that makes people mad — as Socrates had said. The Government should not interfere in the freedom and right of the people to profess or embrace any religion.
