Sir — The outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner in a recent interview has rightly said that “the police in India is the symbol of the Government, the visible symbol of power”; and, “if the establishment has to be attacked, the first to get attacked will be the police”.
Such words have a calming effect on the common man, but the question remains: Is there any change in the ground situationIJ Does the common man, with no influence or contacts, or with little money, approach the police with confidence that his grievance would be looked into for appropriate redressal or, for that matter, even his FIR lodgedIJ The police must understand that mere words will not assuage public grievances as the same will not be believed unless they are accompanied by corresponding action.
