Witch woes

G David Milton

Sir — The murder of five women, branded as ‘witches’ in Kinjia village in Jharkhand mirrored an India not often spoken of openly. The latest incident received a lot of media coverage as five women were killed but  many have suffered this fate over the years for supposedly bringing misfortune. Notably, widows and women who have lost their sons are usually branded as ‘witches’. Sometimes, this is a ploy to disinherit women from the family property. A cultural revolution is needed to change these abominable ways and beliefs.
