Who will bail us out of our economic woes?

Bal Govind

This refers to the article, “UPA prepares poison pill for 2014 election” (August 31) by Ashok Malik. The writer has correctly articulated the point that whosoever comes to power in 2014 will inherit an economy that's in shambles, growth that has slumped to unimaginable depths and an industrial/production sector that will require herculean efforts to revive.

True, there are various external factors beyond one's control, but the least the Congress-led UPA Government should have done was address the internal ills that were afflicting the economy and depreciating the rupee. Unfortunately, the regime seems to have deliberately allowed things to go amiss — and this despite having an economist at the helm.

Policy paralysis, endemic corruption and launch of extravagant populist schemes are what the UPA will be remembered for. The conditions today are similar to the bleak times of 1991, except that we do not have a Narasimha Rao to bail us out of our economic woes.
