Welfare negated

Sujit De

Sir — This refers to the article, “Want social justiceIJ Create jobs” (September 6) by Kushan Mitra. India’s unemployment problem has only grown since the much-hyped liberalisation of the economy in 1991. As a matter of fact, the employment-to-population ratio has alarmingly come down from 58.6 per cent in 1994 to 52.2 per cent in 2013. The disinvestment policy and the policy of gifting the education and health sectors to the private players, without meaningful control, negate the concept of a welfare state as guaranteed in Article 38 of the Constitution.

As a result, the 2011 Census witnessed a phenomenal five per cent increase (23 to 28) in just 10 years in the number of households with unemployed members. The liberalisation policy helps carry coal to newcastle, leaving a suicide door open for the unemployed who have now become almost half of the employable persons in our country.
