Sir — This refers to the news report, “BSY proves fatal for BJP” (May 9).
The last two years have seen corruption being no longer endemic to a region or a party. Whereas warring parties were busy emphasising the degrees of separation in the scale of corruption, the voter of Karnataka has made two things clear: The first is that he hopes politicians will learn the lessons and move on to a better scheme of things, as nothing would be gained by dwelling on the darker side of our politics longer than necessary. The second is that, given his limited choice, the voter has apparently weighed in favour of entities that have taken remedial action, though disputable both in terms of promptness and depth. He has rejected the ones that failed to introspect while they were busy pointing fingers at others.
If the BJP has suffered a rout in Karnataka today, other parties could too in the coming polls. The Indian voter has demonstrated greater maturity than the political parties, and that is how it should be. No wonder democracy endures in this country. The voter protects democracy even as some parties are found wanting.
