Untrustworthy regime

MC Joshi
Sir — This refers to the report, “Singh rubbishes all allegations” (September 22). Media reports have said that the Army has urged the Ministry of Defence to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation to look into allegations of misuse of secret Military Intelligence funds by the former Army chief, Gen VK Singh, who has been accused of seeking to topple the elected Government of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Government has indicated that option of a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation remains open. The allegation of wrongdoing against a former Army chief is a serious matter and certainly needs to be looked into.
However, it is significant that Gen Singh is now virtually in politics and had a couple of days earlier shared the dais with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. The CBI is ill-reputed for manipulating investigations in politically sensitive cases.
Any inquiry should, therefore, be conducted by a special investigation team that the Supreme Court can set up, and the probe, if at all, must be done under the supervision of the apex court.
