Unsporting bureaucracy

Azhar A Khan

Sir — This refers to the report, “Golden coach of Indian hockey quits in disgust” (October 22). The news of the resignation by Indian hockey coach Terry Walsh, who not only has myriad international credits to his name, but has also brought India laurels in the form of a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow and then a gold medal at the Incheon Asian Games when Indian defeated arch rival Pakistan after 16 years to secure a berth in the 2016 Olympics, has stunned thousands of hockey fans in India and elsewhere. Although he has been reportedly persuaded to continue, the issues need to be resolved. Not surprisingly, Mr Walsh had in his resignation letter, cited bureaucratic interference in his line of functioning and some tax-related problems as reasons for putting in his papers. The bureaucracy must mend its ways.
