Unjust election

S Vasudevan

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi” (March 20). The choice of three non-legislators as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers in Uttar Pradesh is not a sign of a healthy democracy. It has been noticed that over the past several years, non-elected legislators and parliamentarians have been made Ministers and Chief Ministers at the Centre and in States too.

People who speak of respecting the mandate given by the people, thrust such leaders on the electorate by making the representatives elect by them to vacate their seats and force the electorate to elect the ones chosen by the political parties to be the Chief Minister or Minister. It is a colossal waste of public money to go in for fresh elections within six months to accommodate political appointees as Ministers.
