Unity jeopardised

M Kumar

Sir — This refers to the report, “Telangana ignites Statehood fires” (August 1). The Congress regime has failed on all fronts, especially on economic development. Now the party is once again resorting to vote-bank politics by endorsing the creation of a separate Telangana State. In circumstances where economic development is the consideration, the creation of a new State is acceptable, but not for political considerations.

Before India gained independence, there were many small States and principalities, and with strenuous and laudable efforts, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel brought all these States and principalities under a common umbrella to give us a united India. This was good for the nation and also for the States.

A fact that seems to elude the Congress-led Government is that the more the number of States, the more will be the interference of regional satraps who will create political problems for the Centre. This will have a larger bearing on India’s progress. In sum, the nation’s unity has been severely jeopardised.
