Letter to the Editor

Uncertainty ahead

Jai Prakash Gupta

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Yes to right to privacy” (August 25). The division bench of the Supreme Court of India has judged the Right to Privacy as a fundamental right but it is yet premature to understand the impact of this judgement with respect to the Government’s decision to link Aadhaar with other identification documents, obviously to prune leakages and ensure transparency.

The steps have so far yielded encouraging results and there has been remarkable cut in unaccounted subsidies distribution and other state spending. The linking is bound to raise the amount of direct and indirect tax collections and provide the Government with an effective tool to manage day-to-day affairs of frauds and unfair practices.

Even after the aggressive push, there are pockets of population who have kept themselves out of this exercise and have been opposing this. The secular-liberal groups, in the Jawaharlal Nehru University and such other institutions, are in the forefront declining to be enrolled under UID, obviously for nefarious designs. It would be interesting to see if the judges of the apex court favour such groups or not. Only time would tell.
