Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Great, but not enough” (November 2). India’s 30-notch jump in the latest Ease of Doing Business ranking is welcome news for the Modi Government after a spate of unwelcome fallouts of demonetisation and hasty implementation of the Goods and Services Tax. This miracle has happened because of the drive to improve governance — streamlining procedures for permits, paying taxes, starting a business and resolving insolvency. The efforts to liberalise rules on foreign direct investment come as an icing on the cake.
While the report gives enough reason to celebrate, the Government would do well to retain the single-minded focus that has seen it improve its position this year. For instance, China is ranked 78th and Bhutan at 75th place. Nevertheless, the Modi Government is entitled to crow on India’s improved ranking from 142 in 2015 to 100 this year. But, Prime Minister Modi’s self-declared goal of the 50th rank is still a distant dream.
