This refers to the editorial, “Change of rule in Kerala” (May 24). It is reassuring that the newly-elected Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, has made it clear that his Government will be for all people of the State. It is certain that Vijayan will do his utmost to provide a graft-free administration.

However, in the background of rising crimes against women in the State, the incoming Government should treat women’s safety as a top priority. Bringing about the much-needed improvement in people’s material circumstances must be its primary concern.

Moreover, the decision to not renovate or refurbish Government bungalows, is Vijayan’s way of hinting at an austere way of life his Cabinet colleagues are expected to follow.
