Trust betrayed

N Ramamurthy

Sir — This refers to the report, “Kejri exit slap in the face of Aam Aadmi” (February 15). Outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has betrayed the confidence of his supporters. The reason he had given for joining politics was to fight the system from within and correct it. But when he was given the opportunity to do, he dropped it a like hot potato.

On the Jan lokpal issue, Mr Kejriwal could have followed the established procedure and waited for clearance from the lieutenant Governor. But he had promised the electorate impossible things. Still, he should have stayed, fought to the finish and tried to fulfil his promises. Had he still failed, he could have asked the voters again during the general election to give him a wider mandate that would allow him to bring the required changes in the system.

But since he didn’t even try to deliver, it will be difficult for him to face the voters who will view him as the one who betrayed their trust, and not as martyr, as Mr Kejriwal may be hoping.
