Letter to the Editor

Trump's approach has fallen on stony ground

Azhar A Khan

This refers to the editorial, “The devious Trump card” (December 17). This is not a one-off instance when Mr Donald Trump has stirred a controversy. This time, he has demanded a blanket ban on the entry of Muslims into the United States. In the past too, Mr Trump made beyond the pale remarks against Mexican immigrants, terming them as “rapists”. He used sexist words for women in the media and cast slurs on war veterans. In turn, he faced flak from the Democrats and the liberals alike. But this time, even his Republican powers have distanced themselves from his views.

Perhaps, Mr Donald, with prospects of his presidential nomination on his mind, longs to capitalise on the proliferation of the worldwide ‘Muslimophobia’ following the terror attacks in Paris and the recent shooting in California. But, thankfully, with no takers of his unpalatable views which fly in the face of the ideology of liberalism and pluralism that the US is considered an ardent exponent of, his xenophobic approach has fallen on stony ground.
