Train safety

TS Karthik

Sir — In the last Railway Budget, the Union Government had announced the introduction of bullet trains and other high speed trains on certain routes. This was a welcome decision. However, one would appreciate if the new Minister for Railways, Mr Suresh Prabhu, implemented appropriate measures to ensure the safety of women passengers with the same speed as that of a bullet train.

One shudders when one recalls how a national level volleyball player, Arunima Sinha, was pushed out of a running train in 2011 while bravely resisting chain-snatchers. There was another shocking incident where a ticket examiner from Mumbai allegedly pushed a 32-year-old woman off a moving train. These terrible incidents are grim reminders of how women passengers are still vulnerable to attacks on trains in this country. The safety of all railway passengers, and especially those of women, cannot be compromised.
