Tough lesson

lR Gupta

Sir — This refers to the article, “India can’t afford Rohingyas’ influx” (September 10) by Swapan Dasgupta. Regarding Myanmar’s refusal to negotiate with the terrorists — the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), the attack on the police on August 25, in Rakhine State led to a ferocious military response which made the Rohingya Muslims flee from the country.

The Myanmar Government claims that the crisis was started by Arsa which resulted in strong retaliation. Having been dealt with a heavy blow, the Muslim body is taking recourse to such tactics as declaration of a unilateral ceasefire and is offering for talks. The Indian Government has taken a bold view and has termed the attackers as terrorists. They should surrender and face legal proceedings. The step of Myanmar Government is an eye opener for India. We should not have talks with the separatists in Kashmir as stone-pelters and militants have breached the law and should be tried accordingly.
