Thoughtless proposition

M Ratan

Sir — This refers to the report,  “CM slams l-G for ‘obstructing’ free pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens” (March 31). lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal’s  decision is undoubtedly wise and in public interest. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s idea to spend nearly `54 crore per year at the rate of `7,000 per person for 77,000 senior citizens’ pilgrimage, seems thoughtless and unnecessary. It clearly shows a confused sense of priorities.

I am also a senior citizen and my foremost priority is my health, as also how to use spare time fruitfully. Pilgrimage is hardly a meaningful issue. Moreover, generally speaking, by the time one reaches the retiring age, one has been to a few pilgrim destinations. Hence, if Kejriwal is keen to offer a gesture to Delhi’s senior citizens, he could set up a few geriatric centres in the north, south, east and west Delhi for the welfare of the old people.
