Letter to the Editor

They are also our people

Manoj Parashar

Sir — This refers to the article, “The growing sense of not belonging” (May 30) by Hari Om.

The increasing sense of isolation and apprehension among the people of Jammu is neither unreal nor unjustified. Since 1947, both Jammu and ladakh have been victims of discrimination and persecution at the hands of a valley-centric political class that is a strong votary of the Kashmiri Muslim sub-nationalism.

It is shocking that the Union Government is playing into the hands of this political class. Jammu and ladakh have been deliberately deprived of their rightful claims. Also, the already marginalised Hindus and Buddhists are wary of insidious attempts by separatist leaders to change the demography of Jammu and ladakh.

Playing with the sentiments of people of both regions may cost dear to the Government, both at the State and the Centre. However, trifurcation of the State will not solve the problems and grievances of these communities. The answer lies in their greater political empowerment.
