Test of secularism

Uttam K Bhowmik

Sir — This refers to the article, “‘H’ word is poison to our secularists” (September 17) by JS Rajput. Does ‘secularism’ mean denying your own culture, values, traditional wealth and personal faithIJ Secularism does not mean a sterilised society without religion, culture, faith and thought. Imagine a society that is bereft of these values.

Religion is an integral aspect of Indian ethos and culture. And we as citizens of this democratic, secular, socio-cultural polity owe it to our children to educate and make them aware of their country’s ancient heritage while upholding the values of each and every faith. That in the real sense would be practising ‘secularism’.
