Teresa's legacy

Vinod C Dixit

Sir — This refers to the report, “Teresa elevated from Mother to Saint” (September 5). The life of Mother Teresa must be understood not in terms of the achievements made by her, nor in her being beatified and raised to sainthood by ‘other humans’, but in the sacrifices made by her. Her determination to serve the poor  must be carried forward us. To love one’s neighbour was to love god — this was the key, not the size of her mission or the power others perceived in her.

Teresa undertook her work with commitment. She provided dignity and respect to those who had been defeated. She was a messiah of the poor and a pillar of support for the weak. Every citizen of India will take pride in the recognition being accorded to Teresa for her service to humanity and god through this canonisation.
