Sycophancy responsible for Congress's defeat

Bal Govind

This refers to the editorial, “Protecting the family” (May 21). There is nothing unusual about Congress leaders wanting to shield the Nehru-Gandhis. Sycophancy runs so deep in the Congress culture that not even the worst defeat can change the functioning of the country's oldest political party.

The resignation episode was a scripted drama; it panned out the way the family wanted it to. Although Mr Manmohan Singh took responsibility for the defeat, he was hardly there in the Congress scheme of things as far as campaigning went. It was the arrogance, lack of far-sightedness, complacency and corruption of Congress leaders which has led to the party’s  fall. If Ms Sonia Gandhi felt responsible for the defeat, why didn't she insist that her resignation be acceptedIJ

As far as the revival of the Congress is concerned, it certainly looks far-fetched at the moment, because there is hardly any strong regional leader left in the Congress around whom a revival could be envisaged.
