Letter to the Editor

Steep decline

Gururajan Ramachandran

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “In Maharaja’s honour” (June 30). It is distressing that the Maharaja of skies, which has been reeling under a debt of Rs 52,000 crore, has decided to take the exit route. It was one of the country’s monopoly airlines, with 360 flights daily and 18 million passengers flying annually. That it failed to compete with other private airlines is a matter of concern. Unwarranted delays and cancellations, besides poor service made people to opt for private air services.

Not only Air India but many other public sector units too have incurred losses due to poor performance, competition and good services. While the

private sector shines, the sick public sector is a matter of concern. The Maharaja, however, will be missed.
