State failure

Gaurav Singhal

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Mayhem over Cauvery” (September 14). looking at the situation in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, it is clear that the dispute over water-sharing has taken a back seat, and now it’s all about teaching the other side a ‘lesson’ on regional superiority.

Those out on the streets, destroying public property, are not daily wage earners, but politically motivated fringe mobs. The State administration could have easily anticipated the possible repercussions of the Supreme Court’s judgement. Its utter helplessness and failure in preventing the destruction of public property, is appalling. Bangalore, India’s IT capital, has a lot of face-saving to do. Events like these vitiate growth and investment in States, and must be checked.
