Social stigma

Bal Govind

Sir — This refers to the article, “Making nation safe for women” (June 18) by Sutapa Mukkerjee. It’s a great idea to have a one-stop ‘rape crisis cell’ in all districts of the country. I am sure it will result in better and faster justice to the victims and their families. But the million dollar question is: Who will break the psychological barrier of non-reporting these cases because of social stigmaIJ The reports in the media are just the tip of the iceberg, as many cases of rape do not get reported.

These crisis cells must have well-trained women counsellors who can handle the situation sensitively without any local bias. Gender issues should be taught to one and all. It would also help if our lawmakers and prominent politicians refrain from making insensitive remarks on the issue of sexual assaults against women.
