Small compromises

MC Joshi

Sir — This refers to the report, “Congress accedes to AAP demands” (December 17). With merely eight seats in the Delhi Assembly, the Congress has nothing to lose. To avail the golden opportunity of exercising indirect control on power, it can go to any extent and accept any condition. The party has a history of supporting minority Governments and then toppling them by withdrawing support at its own convenience. If Mr Arvind Kejriwal falls in this trap, the survival of his Government will be at the mercy of the Congress.

People of Delhi have decisively voted against the Congress and have voted almost equally for the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party. The verdict is an unambiguous ‘no’ for the Congress and a divided ‘yes’ for the BJP and the AAP. Since the two parties are short of a clear majority, the onus of giving a Government to the people of Delhi is on both.

Not getting a clear majority is a blessing in disguise for the AAP which has no experience of running a Government. The Congress will be happy to see an AAP regime fail. The AAP and the BJP should respect people’s mandate and form a Government based on a common minimum programme, which takes care of contentious issues.
