Sensitise society to stop Dalit atrocities

Prakash Dixit

This refers to the article, "India's untouchable past is its shameful present" (August 9) by Sandhya Jain. The author deserves kudos for speaking out what many in these days will shy away for going to the roots of such sensitive issues. The article is a hard hitting criticism of a civilisation that has been denying wrong doings of some of its sections on many who were historically considered below par. In spite of the facts that some of these incidents have occurred recently and some bad-mouthed members of the Hindu society may have spoken things unpardonable in a decent society, it may not be justified to put all the blame on the NDA Government.

Can we deny the fact that similar atrocities were not committed in independent IndiaIJ The problem of atrocities on Dalits and others have always been there for now millennia. It is less of a political and legal problem and more of a deep malice in our psyche. One cannot deal with it by only acts of the Government. It needs to be uprooted by a firm social revolution.
