Seeking privilege

PN Saxena

Sir — This refers to reports that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has challenged in the Supreme Court, a lower court’s order summoning him in connection with the coal block allocation scam. Mr Singh appears to have taken the plea that any action taken by a Prime Minister like him in the public interest could at best be seen as a bad administrative decision, and to attribute criminality to that decision not only sets a bad precedent but hampers the administrative decision-making process. Such a plea makes Mr Singh’s approach to the Supreme Court on a mere issue of summons, frivolous.

Any citizen of India, on receiving summons from a court, even as a witness, must comply with the order. Does the former Prime Minister want to be treated as a privileged person, who need not appear before a CBI court like any aam aadmiIJ
