Secularism demonised

SP Awasthi

Sir — This refers to the article, “Discrimination in the name of secularism” (July 1) by Balbir Punj. The article does well in exposing the folly of the Congress-led Governments, whether at the Centre or in the States where it is presently in power. However it does not articulate ways of counteracting these ills with an appropriate remedy.

In a secular country like ours, the focus of attention should be on the welfare of the common man, regardless of his denominational identity. But the Congress with its brand of secularism has demonised the very character of political dialogue in India.

Fortunately, the people have realised that the remedy is not ‘appeasement’, but the Gujarat model of growth-centric politics. Those who have the country’s interest at heart are fervently hoping that the all-inclusive growth model of Gujarat will take the form of national consensus by the time the 2014 poll is held.
