This refers to the article, “One step towards equality for all” (September 21) by Manjula Pal. It is a well known fact that Muslim personal law that governs oral talaq, has been defended by leading Muslim bodies in the country. No wonder, modern, educated Indian Muslim women regard these unilateral provisions as “archaic, regressive, repressive and demeaning” to the dignity of women in a democratic country like India, where gender equality is a key constitutional requirement.
One hopes and prays that better sense will prevail in the Indian Muslim religious leadership and they introduce necessary reforms in the practice of talaq, in tune with national ethos and established norms in this respect.
