Safety ignored

Meera Jhangiani

Sir — We speak much about child safety and security, but do little in reality. I was shocked to witness scenes during a visit to a renowned school in Dwarka in the morning hours. The place was swarming with uncontrolled traffic, with no one to take care of the little ones. Parents seemed to be in a hurry to drop their wards and rush off, without ensuring that the children had entered the school building safely.

All things appeared too chaotic. The school security guards and drivers were too busy speaking to each other on the streets, hanging around shops, and had little time for the children and their safety.

School authorities across the State, with the help of the traffic police, must take immediate steps to control vehicular movement  near schools. A good first step in this regard will be to shift shops vending tea, snacks and other items, away from the vicinity of the school, so that they do not distract the guards and drivers.
