Rising joblessness

KV Seetharamaiah

Sir — Campaigning for her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ms Priyanka Vadra claimed that the Congress gave the right to work, among other benefits. The Constitution has never stipulated that Indian citizens have no right to work. If such a clause had existed and if the Congress had rescinded that clause, then it would be meaningful to claim that the party gave the right to work.

Unemployment has grown in the UPA rule. Unemployment and inflation are the two enemies of the common man. The UPA Government has done precious little to contain unemployment. If providing employment to all is not possible, at least one member of the family should be given a secure job.

There is also imbalance in the employment of manpower. If a family is taken as a unit, there are instances of all members of a family earning; whereas, in many cases, no one is able to make an earning to feed the family. As the unemployment problem is acute, Government jobs should be provided to only one of the spouses. The Government should not fail to take note of the fact that unemployment and price rise of essential commodities are the driving forces for even good people to take to criminal activities.
