Sir — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hinted at the modernisation of railway stations through private investment. There are many railways-owned buildings which lie abandoned. They are in a dilapidated state. Owing to utter neglect of the abandoned buildings, the roofs have blown off and walls have crumbled.

There are residential quarters for railway personnel. Such residential quarters have been used neither as accommodation to the needy staff nor for any other meaningful purpose.   A face-lift and modernisation of railway stations is necessary. But the buildings not required for official or residential use by the department can be let out to the public at reasonable rent so that they can generate income to the railways. This will also help in proper maintenance of these buildings.
