Rescinding Indus Waters Treaty isn't a good idea

Abrar H Hashmi

This refers to the article, “Indus Water Treaty needs relook” (November 27) by MS Menon. The argument that the operation of the treaty for the last five decades has only perpetuated the Indus dispute and that the treaty has survived because “India willingly acquiesced to the tantrums of its neighbour”, is misplaced. The real issue is that of adherence in letter and spirit to international and legally binding commitments.

Pakistan believes that the Indus Waters Treaty should be implemented and that the mechanism of the Permanent Indus Waters Commission enabled to work effectively. The suggestion that India should invoke Article 62 of the Vienna Convention on law of Treaty 1969 to rescind the treaty is fraught with dangerous consequences. This line of thought is counter-productive and can only blur the vision of cooperation among neighbours for peace and shared prosperity.
