Sir — This refers to the article, “The reluctant leader, a decimated party” (June 7) by Ashok Malik. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had shirked positions of responsibility in the UPA Government. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had asked him to join the Union Cabinet, but he was reluctant. Mr Singh said that he would step down the moment Mr Gandhi wanted to be the Prime Minister, but the moment never came.
Mr Gandhi was made vice president of the party despite his poor leadership and organisational capabilities. His campaigning led the party to its worst ever electoral performance. Now, Mr Gandhi has refused to be the leader of the depleted Congress in the lok Sabha. The fate meted out to the party in this lok Sabha election must make Congressmen go for serious introspection. They must get rid of their obsession to make Mr Gandhi the Prime Minister.
